Beyoncé de YueJanuary 20 A Face in the Crowd... While doing my research for my write up about the exchange programme in Columbia University for Waseda's webpage today, I stumbled upon this poem by Federico Garcia Lorca. Titled Romance Sonambulo from Ballad of the Sleepwalker, it goes: Green, how I want you green. Green wind. Green branches. The ship out on the sea and the horse on the mountain. With the shade around her waist she dreams on her balcony, green flesh, her hair green, with eyes of cold silver. Green, how I want you green… Verde que te quiero verde. Verde viento. Verdes ramas. El barco sobre la mar y el caballo en la montaña. Con la sombra en la cintura ella sueña en su baranda, verde carne, pelo verde, con ojos de fría plata. Verde que te quiero verde… I wonder why Federico Garcia Lorca was so into the colour of green? What does he mean? Whom did he dedicate this poem to? Maybe there shouldn't be any straight-in-the-face explanation to decode the poem. Its beauty lies in its complexity and incomprehensibility. January 13 That mountain, that person and that dogThere is a Chinese movie which I always want to watch, but never did. I don't even know much about the plot; I am simply intrigued by the name of the movie: 那山那人那狗 which directly translates to "That mountain, that person and that dog" The sheer randomness of this combination reminds me about the amazing randomness of life. For instance, you opened a book called The Great Gatsby in December and found someone left you a message there in November. Exactly half a month later, that person crossed 8000 miles to be standing and breathing just in front of you. One day, you ran out of cash and couldn't even exchange money in a bank. and had to travel to an unknown town 4 stops away. Then, that town turned out to be a beautiful place. With the combination of that mountain, that sea, that shrine and that breeze. On another day, two were stuck on the bay as there were no taxis or bus at all. A kind old uncle traveling across the country let the two hitch-ride on his camping van. And so the two met his wife, his dog and got to arrive at their destination just on time. When the clock struck twelve on the last day of 2009, a new year starts like never before. It was a moment unlike anything in the past or in the future. Will it always be that way all the time? I have no answer. Someone told me that one should believe in the Green Light and find it. Of all the gifts and presents, I think those words are the finest. They shall become part of my new year resolution. Wherever that mountain is; whoever that person is; and whatever that dog is... November 21 I will ask you this question only once... I just came across one of the most beautiful Facebook updates by my friend...It goes: 「有一句話,我只問這一次。以後不會再問了。為什麼是我?」
「答案很長,我必須用一生去回答你。準備聽我說了嗎?」 There are moments when you don't have to understand anything, to understand everything. Two simple lines...and yet, so powerful. I am truly happy for her... * I think this song goes really well with these two lines* November I miss New York!! November 01 "it feels like flying...." While studying for our Emerging Markets exam yesterday, my Portuguese group-mate Dennes showed me this video. (studying in a group always results in digression somehow lol). Dennes' Japanese sailing teammates will refuse to go out on a super windy day, but according to him, sailing on a super windy day is the whole point. To quote him, "I feel so alive...it feels like flying." Hopefully, I can join them the next time they sail:) And I hope Keisuke gets back to me soon about fishing. October 17 CocorosieBeautiful music....reminds me of Marc Chargall.
His bizarre dreams, swirl of colors...mystic, naive, and eccentric beings
all blended onto his canvas. No explanation, just....

September 27 History of Western Philosophy This is absolutely hilarious; A short-cut to learn your Western Philosophy lol. But don't take it too seriously! September 25 What I want for winter... Scheisse (the good thing about having German friends), I have been trying to look for a pair of decent boots for days to no avail. The Japanese boots are too ornamented, and deleteriously too high for me at the moment. Of course, price is another factor. While I don't want to buy cheap and flaky ones that don't last, I also don't want to spend a bomb on them. (I have no use for boots back in Singapore). Then, saw a pair of really cute black leather boots on a Chinese website and tried to arbitrage, but the shopowner doesn't allow me to, cos I don't have bank account or credit card issued from China. Kousuke then suggested that I should ask Athena for help, which I did (That's really smart of him). In the end, it still didn't work out cos the price of mailing them over is equivalent to the price of the boots. Basically, it means that the price differential is not that great, if I fly the boots over to Tokyo. What a waste! Thanks to Athena and Kousuke anyways~ What I want is really simple. But then again, I am really stringent about the "simple" part. So in summary, it should have: 1) No heels. 2) Thin sole 3) Black leather 4) No adornments 5) Sharp and clean 6) Straight cut 7) Knee high 8) Round, but slightly pointed front Like these: Any suggestions? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() August 29 Surprise of the weekBumped into Kazu on my first night back in Tokyo...then bumped into Rui on the second day.
Then bumped into Azuma today...so many surprises.
But I guess the biggest surprise of the week comes from my dad. He emailed me just now, telling me that he bought a condo from Trevista today. My jaw dropped cos he didn't say anything beforehand. So naturally, I was kind of grumpy over the fact that noone consulted my opinion. But after googling about it, I must say I am quite pleased haha. It will be near MacRitchie Reservoir where I can kayak for all I want! Think I have an affinity with water...even though people say it is super ulu to stay in Punggol, there is still something I really like about the area: it is near Punggol Marina where I can go boating and fishing whenever Zheng feels like taking the boat out. Right now, it is always a small motor boat, but hopefully he can upgrade into a yacht or sports boat or something, so that his friends can benefit lol.
First comes the picture, or first comes the words?
Or rather, first comes the graffiti, or first comes the ideology?
Sometimes, it is difficult to trace your own footsteps and your own thoughts.
The things you think you know yesterday, get all scattered at the first sign of daybreak.
Drifting with the wind, the memories carry themselves to places where they can grow anew.
And so we keep going forward; groping and searching for the things that matter the most.
First comes the traveller, or first comes the road?
If you don't know the road of your life, do you still travel?
July 16 Ransacking Mum’s WardrobeWhile making my way downtown for the first time in a year, I noticed that high waist dresses and skirts from the 80s are back in vogue here. The sleek, sexy pencil skirt gets a modern update with a higher waist. Although I didn't really catch this trend back in New York, I couldn’t help but to think that it will look quite appealing on me.
Then a wondrous idea struck me…mummy used to wear skirts like that too! A few days ago, I finally set my idea to work and virtually ransacked my mum’s wardrobe to retrieve two of her high-waist skirts (a grey one and a beige one), which she bought in Hong Kong in the late 80s or early 90s. Just imagine, after 2 decades of being ‘in’, ‘out’ and ‘in’ again, they still look sparklingly new!
Now I am wearing them regularly to work and fancy the notion that I am being extremely environmental-friendly. Not surprisingly, they also look great on me, keeping those curves really sleek. This is largely attributed to that fact that my mum had the same height, build and size as me when she was young. Both the beige skirt and the grey one are suitably polished for business. Yet there is an element of mischief. If you are looking for something casual and feminine for a garden party or an evening out, this is it.
Another thing that pleases me very much is that I am saving big bucks. I mean...really big bucks. Apparently, Saks Fifth Avenue back in New York is selling a beige high-waist skirt, which looks like it can be the lost twin of my mum’s beige high-waist skirt, for US$175.00. And French Connection is selling their black high waist skirt for £40.00. So girls...maybe it is time to pick up mum's long forgotten apparel:)

Took some time out to take some photos. Here's MY OWN INTERPRETATION of this fashion:
Last but not least, this is the look I am still working on. I think it looks really classy:
June 30 Let's pretend we don't existThere was a time when Margo and I would listen to "Let's pretend we don't exist" for what seemed like forever in our squarish dorm room which overlooks Broadway. I thought I won't like the idea of having another human being staying in the same room as me, intruding my privacy and sharing my stuff. But we got along so well that it became unimaginable to live in another arrangement. Most of the time she will be laughing, making a huge mess of our room, cooking, going out to parties after parties where she can dance barefooted, and not forgetting her deep involvement with NGOs, green-peace, feminist activities too. We all have our problems but what I really admire about her is her ultra optimistic and free spirit. Margo is the type of person who doesn't make demands, but is happier to give. I think, I am really gonna miss her... June 06 Like A BulletFirst heard this voice in Thomas' car, somewhere along the highway back to Heising, the German village in the beautiful and serene Allgäu region, where I have been putting up in Danny's grandma's place for the past 2 weeks. And it captivated me... To tell the truth, I imagined a sexy, flirtatious and mature woman to this voice. So it naturally surprised me to see the chubby teenage girl Stefanie Heinzmann as that voice. Maybe this is what music should be like after all. Be the person who you are. It seems that US pop charts have yet to discover this young Swiss singer. That's actually good news:) |
